The fees for 2009 have been set as follows: African and South African members: R200 (please make payment in South African RANDS) International members: US$50 or UK£35 (This is roughly the equivalent of R200 plus R140 that the Society has to pay in bank charges). SOUTH AFRICAN HISTORICAL JOURNAL I am happy to report that we are now up to date with the publication of the South African Historical Journal. The most recent issue of the Journal – Volume 60, No 4, December 2008 – was posted out to all members on the last working day of January 2009. If your copy has not arrived by mid February, please would you let me know and I will follow up with the people responsible for posting copies to Society members. Cynthia Kros, Sandra Swart and I are very committed to ensuring a smooth flow of journals through 2009, and we hope that you will receive the four numbers of Volume 61 of the Journal on time – in March, June, September and December. We believe that the inevitable teething troubles with the new publishing arrangements are now behind us, and that 2009 will be a better year. Members will be interested to know that Volumes 1 to 49 of the Journal are now available on the Journal’s website: www.informaworld.com/rshj Volumes 50 to 59 will be posted up shortly; I am busy organising this last stage, and look forward to having the complete run of the Journal available electronically. A further development to report is that our new submissions platform, through Manuscript Central, is properly up and running, and we prefer that all articles submitted to the Journal comes through the following address: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/rshj This website ought to make the lives of editors and contributors much easier, as it keeps track of all correspondence and developments related to each submission. For those who find the system off-putting (and I assure you we are sympathetic to those allergic to this kind of platform and its distance and formality), you are welcome to correspond with us more directly and personally; we are accommodating! As always, we remain keen to hear from members of the Society, and in particular we encourage submissions – articles, review articles, book reviews and other pieces – to the Journal. We are open to any ideas about what could be published. Please keep us informed about any conferences and academic gatherings at which we could canvass material, and promote the Journal where you can. The quality of the Journal can only benefit from the active engagement of members of the Society with the editorial team. Nick Southey |
